Norway: The Enchanted Land of Trolls and Fjords

Norway is the land of trolls, moss, and very expensive things and I have to tell you its beauty far surpasses what I expected.  It kind of reminds me of the wild beauty of Alaska and makes me yearn to go back and hike through the peaty soil and see all those friends again.  Miss you all you crazy Alaska peeps!!

So far, we have been to many places in Norway and will be here for another few weeks.  It is also starting to stay light out until a little after midnight because we are getting so far north.  Land of the midnight sun!!! :)  It is kind of nuts to come out of your room where there is NO sunlight all day and walk outside at midnight and it look like daytime.

As I have said, there has been no eating out for me in Norway.  Everything, especially food, is crazy expensive.  If you go to McDonalds you can expect to drop $16 (95 kroners) on just the cheeseburger.  We all went out to a bar the other night and I got ONE beer and that alone cost me the equivalent of $20!!!  Needless to say it has been difficult to justify a $15 coffee to sit in a coffee shop to monopolize the internet.  In the same way, I apologize for not updating this for some time and I promise it will get better after we get out of expensive Norway.  The wonderful and strikingly mountainous fjords make it difficult for the ship to get reception but it does make you feel as if I you are lost in the land before time. :)

My favorite place so far was Geiranger and it is because me and three others went up and around the mountains on bicycles and got to take it the beauty around us.  The air was also so fresh and I couldn’t stop myself from just taking the deepest breaths possible without passing out.   After the last month of chemicals being sprayed around the sjip I felt like I struck the fountain of youth in that clean air.    I cannot wait to tell you about the other places we are going this coming cruise because we are heading as far north as we will go the entire contract!!

Until then I will let all these pictures do all the talking because I can’t do it justice.

As far as ship life goes, besides the internet, everything is fine.  I am finding my routine and also getting to know a lot of people very well.  I officially feel part of the crowd now and I like that. The food is starting to get old though.  O well, can’t have it all I guess:)

Inspired by Some Life Loving Guests

I am sorry it has taken me so long to get this posted!!  It has actually been written for about four days but the internet has been on almost a constant blackout for about a week and that makes it rather difficult to post.  I am hoping it will get better but seeing as we are pretty far north (Norway…which is another story) for a few weeks I am just going to assume it will be just as bad.  If it can happen it will:)

ALSO, WE ARE OFFICAILY OUT OF CODE RED!!!  Sigh of relief!

While there were three sea days with not much to report and I am currently in Norway, (this I am looking forward to telling you about!) there has been something that has really struck me about ship life and it is the guests.

There are the guests that are just on for just a simple vacation from life and work.  That is all fine and not to be judged because who doesn’t enjoy a lovely vacation occasionally.  What struck me though are the people that do it as their last ditch effort.

I need to tell you about some people that I have met so far.

Mama Lou, her stuffed animal, Tito, Brian, and I
First of all, Mama Lou, this woman can only be described as a Texas fire cracker yielding a walker and an over-sized stuffed animal of the day.  You can see/hear her coming from a mile away, the can be considered the “hostess” of the ship, and she refuses to come to my ENCORE show because she says, “It is too hoity-toity for me.”  She is a character and actually LIVES on the ship.  That’s right, day in and day out, and when I asked her what her reasoning was behind it she said, “It’s because I pay the same as a nice nursing home and at least I’m not gonna die in a bed all by myself…plus I get to see the world from my window.” This made sense and I am finding this mentality to be more common than I expected.

Ok yes, cruising can be stereotyped, at least on Holland America Line, to be an “older person hobby.”  It is known that our median range of cruisers generally is around 50-80 yrs of age.  I’m finding that cruising for some is not just an endless food buffet and ports, it's much more.

That being said, I was talking to this lovely older woman in the Ocean Bar at about 10pm at night.  She was funny and with it, and had more energy than I had at that time of night, but as she opened up I learned about the fact that she was terminal with cancer.  She was supposed to be gone about three weeks prior and decided to spend the last of her life savings to come on our cruise.  She had no plan after and not even for the next day but she was living life day by day and all of this I learned over a glass of wine.  Whoa, instantly I felt really dumb and thankful at that same time.  Dumb for even feeling tired and thankful for many many reasons.

This was not the only person I have met like this. Why I am inspired to write this blog now was mostly because of a family last night.  Up in the Crow’s Nest, the dance floor was hopping and there in the middle was this family; a mother, father, brother, and an older sister.  They were having a ball and looked as if they were going to party until the sun came up.  They even initiated a conga line (yes, these things still happen:)).  Two other guests were sitting with me and told me about the fact that they were on the ship because both sons of the family had cerebral palsy and that this was the FIRST family vacation they have ever been able to do since the late teen boys were born.

I guess I am learning a lot more than I even bargained for on this ship. I am ok with that.

********************

Today, Ulvik, Norway for just a short walk and maybe a $10 coffee (yikes!) and tomorrow Stavanger, Norway to hike one of the worlds wonders and sought after bucket-lister, The Pulpit Rock.  Can’t wait to tell you all about it!

Casablanca, Morocco and the Everlasting Code Red

Casablanca was one of the places I was most jazzed about going to.  I mean who doesn’t want to visit Africa!? Granted, I might have had a romantic vision of the place from the glorified movie version with Humphrey Bogart and Ingrid Bergman but, to be honest, I really don’t have to come back here again.  It was fine if you are ok with extremely dirty streets, heckling locals that never cease, and the ability to not eat or drink anything there.  I have to say there were some colorful and beautiful spots of the city that I managed to get some pictures of before the torrential rain.  We did visit the olive market which was a beautiful sight and could have come out of the movie Aladdin but it was all look-and-no-touch because of the different types of bacteria found in the water. Sadly, I was unaware of this and had a small coffee, and not wanting to share too much, let’s just say I was not ok for the next 48 hrs.  Thankfully that was all that I had!!  We also went to a few shops but otherwise the best part of the day was the beginning in the older part of the city (where all my pictures are from) where it seemed the culture and life of the city where still rooted in older times.

On that note, I found out that we are actually going to Tangier, Africa on a chartered cruise in July.  It is still in Morocco but I am keeping my fingers crossed that it will be a better place all around, and now I know not to drink the water.:)

As far as the code red goes, I am currently listening to “Hand Washing for Life” on the crew channel which can only be described as a melange of clips of people washing their hands and it has been playing for the past couple days.  Ok I get it, we are still in code red and I am doing my third super-sensitization tonight in the library.  My hands are peeling from doing this but, on the bright side, I have not gotten the Norovirus even though others of the entertainment department haven’t been so lucky.  In fact, tonight I am going to be filling in for one of the Jazz singers in the ocean bar that went into quarantine yesterday.  I am very excited and also scared to no end because this will be WITHOUT a rehearsal!!  WOO HOO!  I am sure the adrenaline will be running but I bet you after tonight I will be hooked.

On another note, all of us cast members are putting together a cabaret for dark nights or if something happened and the guest entertainers couldn’t make it on the ship.  We perform the first show on Friday the 5th when we are in Rotterdam, Holland (our next port) and I am scared with this as well.:)  I guess I am all sorts of terrified lately!  I decided to pick the hardest song I could think of because this is such a safe venue to try new stuff and I chose Glitter and Be Gay!!!  WHAT WAS I THINKING!?  For anyone who doesn’t know this song here is a great clip of what it should sound like.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aVsLMxam21I  Here’s to broadening my horizons but please wish me luck because I am going to need it.
